Discovering Winter Together

When Marcelo first became involved with MyXC, he wasn't a skier.

Like many families, he signed up because his child wanted to try something new. As a transplant to Minnesota, winter wasn't something he naturally embraced, and he had little connection to skiing or the outdoor community.

But one season changed everything.

Today, Marcelo volunteers as an assistant coach, sweeper, and equipment manager with the Hyland Saturday club, helping families experience the same welcoming community that inspired him.

One of his favorite MyXC memories came during the final day of the Level 1 season. Coaches organized a longer ski loop as a fun challenge, and Marcelo watched the excitement grow as the young skiers realized they could do something that once felt impossible.

"Seeing how excited the kids got about conquering the loop" is a moment he won't forget.

For Marcelo, skiing has become much more than a winter activity.

"It's such good exercise, and I love the feeling of fresh, crisp air."

Even more meaningful has been watching children inspire their own parents.

"I've seen parents who had never skied before decide to give it a try because their children loved it."

That ripple effect is one of the things Marcelo loves most about MyXC. The program doesn't just introduce kids to skiing—it encourages entire families to discover the joy of being active outdoors together.

His own journey has changed the way he experiences Minnesota winters.

"As a transplant to the region, it's been the journey of learning how proper clothing makes a huge difference, to discovering the many opportunities to do fun things outside comfortably in winter. Now I actually look forward to the season."

Above all, Marcelo hopes his child grows up with a love and appreciation for nature.

"I hope my little one has a positive and healthy attitude toward the seasons and a deep appreciation and care for nature, which makes it all possible."

His advice to anyone considering volunteering is simple:

"Clubs are volunteer-run, so you will make a huge difference!"

Marcelo's story reminds us that sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children is the willingness to try something new ourselves.
