Welcome to St. Paul Como Park | MYSL Ski Sparks

We are in need of volunteer coaches.  We also need a Coaching Director, which involves assigning ski groups and coaches, recruiting coaches, and finding coverage when coaches are absent.  Please email como@myxc.org if you are able to volunteer.

Ramsey County/St. Paul Ski Passes
Adult Volunteers, Adult Level 1 Attendants, and any skiers 13 years or older will need to purchase a ski pass to participate in Como SkiSparks.  Como requires a natural snow pass, but note our backup location at Battle Creek requires an all access pass.  For more information on which ski pass to purchase, please go here.

2023 Schedule and Location

Meet at Como Park Golf Course Sundays at 2pm. Our first club meeting is Sunday, January 1.  Our last club meeting is Sunday, February 19.  If we need a make-up day, it will be Sunday, February 26.

Level 1 meets for 1 hour, all other levels meet for 1.5 hours.  All Level 1 skiers should have an attendant.  Attendants should register here.

If snow conditions require it, our backup location is the snow-making loop at Battle Creek Regional Park in Maplewood.  This area of Battle Creek requires the annual or daily All-Access ski pass for skiers 13 and older.  Any meetings at the backup location, will NOT likely be at our usual meeting time.  We will post more details when the backup location policy is finalized.

Equipment
The Como club is out of rentals for the season.  If you have rented, you should have received an email about picking up your order.

2023 Adult Learn to Ski With EU
Endurance United is offering a 4-week Learn to Ski course for adults that will meet at the same time at Como SkiSparks.  Sessions will be on 1/8, 1/15, 1/23, and 1/30.  The 16 spots fill quickly so register soon.  More information and registration is here.  We hope adult participants will join SkiSparks as sweepers and to help coach on the Sundays following lessons.

Clothing

Make sure to dress in layers. Polypropylene or lightweight wool will keep the moisture off the skin, wear a number of insulating layers for warmth that can be shed as games and skiers heat up. Add something non-absorbent (like snowpants) on the outside to cut the wind and minimize sticking snow when we're rolling around. Use this checklist for success:

Dry boots: Boots need to be dried out near a heat source between uses. They can’t stay in the car or garage. Dry, wool socks: A dry pair of socks needs to be put on right before you put on your boots. Put on a hat and a neck gator (buffs, muffs, neck warmers): We all know we lose a lot of heat through our heads. But making sure your ears and neck are covered is just as important. Hand/Foot warmers: For when it is really cold, hand and foot warmers are helpful. These are oxygen activated and you can “turn them off” by putting them in an airtight container (such as a jam jar) to get multiple uses. Calories: A skier that is low on calories will have a hard time staying warm. Bringing back up snacks and drinks is always a good idea.

Important to Know

  • Parking – parking can be a challenge at Como Ski Chalet, so be sure to plan your trip.  Alternate parking is across the street, if needed. (Como Park Map)
  • First Day – Each coach will have a ski bib and name tag (with parent contact information) for your child.  We will collect the bibs at the last lesson.
  • Volunteers and Coaches – Will be wearing MYSL coach bibs in the level color they coach.
  • Weather –  If the forecast is very cold or cold with wind chill (-2 degrees air temperature or -10 degrees windchill), we’ll cancel. We may shorten lessons on very cold days (below 5 degrees air temperature or 10 degrees windchill).  Cancelations will be noted on this web page, via email to all members, and on Facebook by 8 am Sunday.

Communications
We communicate with Como MYSL families via email and Facebook.  Please contact us with questions and feedback at como@myxc.org.
